Sex workers in Lagos State yesterday took
to the streets to participate in this year’s May Day rally like other workers. The
Lagos State sex workers under the aegis of Ohotu
Diamond Women Initiative carried a big banner, with the inscription: “Sex workers need rights, not rescue.”
Some of the sex workers in an exclusive
chat with Best Lover at the Agege Stadium, venue of the May Day
celebration in Lagos, called on the Federal and State governments to
decriminalize sex work (prostitution) to curtail the prevailing situation in
the country where sex workers’ rights are serially violated by law enforcement
agents. They argued that decriminalizing sex work will help to curb crime, reduce
the spread of HIV-AIDs infection and more importantly, help to boost government’s
internally generated revenue as sex workers and their patrons and facilities
from where they operate can be taxed as it is done in many developed nations.
